Kansas City Zoo 2010
Missouri

We have only visited the Kansas City Zoo this one time and primarily because they had one of the fountains we were hunting. We did take the time to visit the many excellent exhibits but that was not my primary focus and it shows when I sort through the photographs.

Zoo Train Llama Type Llama Type

Llama, alpaca, or guanaco I am not sure about these guys. I photographed them because of the unusual coloring mix of either tufts of chocolate in the white or just chocolate chips. Sorry about the barnyard background but that is where they were and there was no way to disguise it other than blurring or inserting a fake backdrop and they definitely were not cooperating in posing for the camera.

Macaw Kangaroo Singing Dog

We first encountered the New Guinea Singing Dog at the Miller Park Zoo where one was just sitting on a platform and really singing to accompany any emergency vehicle passing by with a siren. These were not singing but wandering all over the enclosure so I could get some rather nice photographs.

Hippo Zebra Bat Eared Fox

While the hippo and zebra are common zoo residents the sleeper with the big ears is a Bat-Eared Fox. Unusual for canines they use the big ears to locate their primarily insect diet at night.

Scimitar-horned Oryx Blue Duiker Red-flanked Duiker

Here I was able to capture a comparison between the Blue and Red-flanked duikers. The big guy is appropriately named the Scimitar-horned Oryx. While duikers are fairly common in zoos I had not seen both types at once and I think this is our first oryx.

Wart Hog Ground Hornbill Saddle-billed Stork

And finally one of my favorites the wart hog actually looking back at me and posing. The three birds who just would not get away from the unfortunate chain fence background are African ground hornbills and the single bird is a saddle-billed stork. This nice zoo probably deserves another visit but I am not sure when that will fit into the schedule.
